The Story of Mooother Nature
June 4, 2026
In 2001, Travis Elementary joined schools across the Houston area in participating in the CowParade Houston “Cows in Schools” program, a community art initiative benefiting Texas Children’s Hospital and the Texas Children’s Cancer Center.
Students worked together to design and paint a cow sculpture that the kids lovingly called Mooother Nature, creating a colorful work of art that celebrated creativity, collaboration, and the garden in which the cow was soon to call her home.
For 25 years, generations of Travis Tigers have walked past her on their way to class, posed for photos beside her, and proudly pointed her out to family and friends. Through sunshine, storms, and countless school memories, Mooother Nature has stood as a reminder of the creativity and spirit of our students.
After a quarter century outdoors, however, time had begun to take its toll. Years of exposure to Houston’s sun, rain, and changing weather had left the sculpture cracked and worn. Small openings had formed in the fiberglass, creating places where insects and moisture could collect and threaten the cow’s structure.
As Travis prepared to celebrate the 25th anniversary of Mooother Nature’s arrival, it became clear that preserving this piece of school history would require more than a fresh coat of paint. A team of professionals was assembled by the PTA Arts team as the sculpture underwent a complete restoration, including repairs to damaged areas, reinforcement of weakened sections, new horns and ears made to match what was once there, and extensive sandblasting and prep work to ensure she would remain part of our campus for years to come.
Once the restoration was complete, the tradition came full circle. Just as Travis students painted Mooother Nature in 2001, the 5th grade students of 2026 were invited to help create her next chapter. Working under art teacher Stephanie Murillo, they transformed the restored sculpture into a new work of art that reflects the creativity, imagination, and school pride of a new generation.
Today, Mooother Nature stands not only as a reminder of the students who created her 25 years ago, but also as a symbol of the generations of Travis Tigers who have cared for, celebrated, and added to her story.
Happy 25th Anniversary, Mooother Nature.
