Welcome to Travis
Hello and Welcome!
I had heard so many wonderful things about Travis from neighborhood friends over the years that I felt committed to the school before I had even set foot in it, and since the eldest of my two boys started kindergarten six years ago, my fondness for our Travis community has only grown. I so appreciate our amazing, engaged families, volunteers, staff, and teachers! After volunteering alongside many of our teachers in classrooms and labs and in the garden and on field trips over the years, I really cannot say enough great things about them. They know and care and teach to every individual child’s abilities, and our teachers, as well as our administration, value the social and emotional development of the whole child in addition to academic growth. This community is why I volunteer.
This will be my fifth year of involvement with the Travis PTA board. I first joined the board when a dear friend who was the incoming PTA president at the time asked what executive board role I saw myself filling. As a non-practicing engineer, I told her that spreadsheets and numbers were my thing, and before I knew it, I was the new treasurer. Borrowing from her playbook, let me ask you where you see yourself fitting with the Travis PTA? We have roles that entail bigger commitments and others that are smaller ones…and truly, all sizes in between. Some volunteer opportunities might be a one-time event whereas others would be ongoing, and while we always have volunteer needs during school hours, we also have jobs that can be accomplished in the evening or on weekends. Also, if you would like to know more about the Travis PTA board, in consideration for future years, we’ll happily plug you in with a VP, the treasurer, the secretary, or one of the chairs.
Travis has a really incredible community, and all of you are a part of that. If there is any way that I can help your transition or find you a role, do not hesitate to reach out to me at firstname.lastname@example.org.
Tom Day, Principal
My focus is on fostering an inclusive, individualized, and innovative learning environment where students are happy, engaged, and thrive academically and social-emotionally.
I believe in empowering our amazing teachers to implement what they are passionate about — developmentally appropriate best practices that promote creativity, movement, and whole-child learning principles. And I believe in partnering and collaborating with our families — their engagement, generosity, and spirit help provide our teachers with the tools and support they need and help make Travis the unique community it is.
I joined the Travis family after spending five years as assistant principal at HISD's Frank Black Middle School. I began my career in HISD teaching first and third grades at Lockhart Elementary for six years.
I earned my undergraduate degree in journalism from Texas A&M and a Master of Education degree in Administration from Sam Houston State University. My wife, Jennifer, is also an educator in HISD – we met at Lockhart Elementary! Our 11-year-old son is our greatest delight and always makes us smile. We enjoy camping and hiking in National Parks and reading books together. I also spend time poring over fantasy sports teams and rooting for the Houston teams and the Aggies.
