Welcome to Travis
Welcome to Travis!
I am delighted to serve a second year as PTA president at a school that values not only academics but the development of the whole child. Travis is about teaching our kids more than facts - it's about teaching them to be creative, responsible, kind, and innovative citizens of the world. I don't think there's a more noble purpose to which our faculty and families could aspire! This purpose encompasses the Travis PTA's mission as well, which is to connect our students and our families with opportunities for education and engagement, neither of which is in short supply on our campus and in our community.
In my 'other' life, I am a professor of international management and active researcher in the areas of leadership, expatriate adaptation, and the cultural influence of globalization. As any parent will tell you, sometimes interacting with children is a little like crossing borders into a new country! I hope to bring my professional experience into my role as president to serve not only our students but also our faculty and parents as well.
It is my aim to continue the long history of exemplary work of our PTA by honoring our heritage while also introducing new traditions. Everyone has a place in the Travis family, and the PTA is always here to help you find yours.
Tom Day, Principal
In my sixth year as principal at Travis Elementary, it is an honor and privilege to serve the students and families of this tight-knit and supportive learning community. I joined the Travis family after spending five years as assistant principal at Frank Black Middle School, where we worked with neighborhood families to build a new Vanguard Magnet program and increase total enrollment by 50 percent. Before that, I spent six years teaching first and third grades at Lockhart Elementary, the last four years with a focus on gifted and talented (G/T) instruction.
I earned my undergraduate degree in journalism from Texas A&M and a Master of Education degree in Administration from Sam Houston State University. My wife, Jennifer, is also an educator in HISD – we met at Lockhart Elementary! Our 10-year-old son is our greatest delight and always makes us smile. We enjoy camping and hiking in National Parks and reading books together. I also spend time poring over fantasy sports teams and rooting for the Houston teams and the Aggies.
