PTA BOARD MEMBER SPOTLIGHT: MEET OUR DYNAMIC HOSPITALITY DUO

MEET KRISTIAN:

My name is Kristian Borden. I have a second grader, Hollis; a kinder kid, Hannah; and my youngest ball of energy, Harlan, just started at St. Mark’s.

This is my first year on the PTA committee, and I am taking baby steps by sharing the hospitality role with Caroline Johnston. I love meeting new people through my role and cannot wait to meet more. Prior to serving on the committee I have been a classroom parent, garden mom (I look forward to this every week), and a Marathon Kids coach.

As a former teacher, I feel at home in a school, and Travis is one of my favorite places to be, even if that means chasing around Harlan while trying to volunteer.

I work part-time at Barnaby’s Cafe and have run into some of y’all there. I love to run (in races), read, and spend time with my kids.

MEET CAROLINE:

Hi, my name is Caroline Johnston, and I’m excited to be a part of the PTA as Hospitality Co-Chair with Kristian Borden. My children are in Kinder and Second grade at Travis, and we have loved our Travis experience!

I work as an Occupational Therapist for the Harris County Department of Education and in neurological rehab. I’m originally from Louisiana and moved to Houston after living in South Africa, where my husband is from.

I’m looking forward to the rest of the school year as part of the Travis community!

CORPORATE MATCHES FOR DONATIONS TO THE TRAVIS PTA (INCLUDING AUCTION)

Did you know that every year billions of dollars in eligible corporate matches go unclaimed? We hate to see match opportunities being missed, so we are here and ready to help you navigate any donation match claims with your employers. We are already registered with many Houston companies, and we update and enroll in new programs every year. If you have any questions about your company’s corporate matches for charitable donations, check with your Human Resources department. If your company needs us to provide any information to verify our nonprofit status, reach out to Ali Kirby at sponsorships@travispta.org, and we will make that happen. The end of 2019 will signify the claims’ deadline for many employers. Don’t forget that your 2019 auction (yes, last spring!) sponsorships and purchases (specifically the amount over the fair market value) are very likely to be eligible for employer matching. as are this fall’s carnival sponsorships and general donations.

COFFEE WITH THE PTA WRAP-UP

Thank you to everyone who turned up for our first Coffee of the PTA last Wednesday! We covered a lot of ground, including exciting Carnival updates from 2019 Chair Christina Wilkerson, a rundown of PTA's new recycling initiatives from Environmental Chair Derby Stevens, and we heard from special guests, Leann Mueller and Alex Mealer, from the Houston Heights KeepKidsAliveDrive25.org team. Special thanks to our PTA Hospitality team, Kristian Borden and Caroline Johnston, for dishing out the breakfast goodies, and to the many parents who showed up to lend their support.

Our next Coffee with the PTA is scheduled for November 15, and we'll be reporting on Carnival results. Mark your calendars now - you won't want to miss it!

GARDEN UPDATE FROM MS. WEST

Good-bye to Monarchs: October is the peak month for Monarch migration through Texas. We will track the progress of migrating Monarch butterflies as they fly south towards their wintering grounds in Mexico. We will sing them farewell, sew some wildflower seeds to provide nectar plants for their return, and start cutting back our tropical milkweed. We have been doing this for several years, and this year we want to share with neighbors and friends our goal of promoting Monarch health and migration. Students will bring home a handout about cutting back tropical milkweed that can be read and passed along to others. The handout will briefly summarize the following information about why it is necessary to cut back tropical milkweed. You can also find the handout HERE.

Wildflower seeds: Students will remove wildflower seeds from seed heads to prepare for spreading in our pollinator gardens. Some seeds will be distributed this week in the butterfly gardens. We will look at the differing size and shape of seeds, then measure seeds and record data in science journals along with drawings of seeds.

Weather observations: Students will continue to make their observations in the garden using our tools to measure rainfall, air temperature, soil temperature, and windiness. In addition, we will be tracking the time of sunrise and sunset. Observations will be recorded in student-made field notes or their science journal. Please bring science journals if students have not made field notes.

As you may know, the goal of our weather observations is to determine when it will be best to plant cool weather vegetables in our gardens. Here's too cool weather coming soon!

See you in the garden. — Ms. West, Travis Elementary Garden Coordinator

Thank You to ORGANIZER EXTRAORDINAIRE Meghan McGarry!

When professional organizer and Travis parent Meghan McGarry offered to donate her services to the Travis PTA, you can bet that we took her up on it! Our different storage areas within the school had been relocated and consolidated over the summer, so we had a big project for her. She recently spent several hours getting our PTA storage closet into shape, and we are so appreciative. Thank you, Meghan!

COFFEE WITH THE PTA: WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 2

PTA MEMBER SPOTLIGHT: MEET CHRISTINA

My name is Christina Wilkerson. I have 3 kids: Lucy in 3rd, Wesley in 2nd and 3 year old Tiger cub Gus.

I have been involved with the Carnival for the past 3 years, and I’m excited to be this year’s PTA Carnival Chair (carnival@travispta.org). I love giving back to the school that does so much for children. When I’m not entertaining and shuttling children around to their various activities, my day job is with Beautycounter - working to educate people on safer choices for their families. My husband Dusty and I love to entertain and travel with (and without) our family.

GRANDPARENTS DAY AT TRAVIS

All grandparents, parents and honored guests are invited to join children during their lunch time for a celebration of Grandparents Day this Friday, October 4. Lunches are available for purchase in advance at the front office, and guests will be treated to a reception and school tour. The Spirit Store “Pop Up Shop” will also be open. For more information and a schedule of lunch times by class, please click HERE. For questions about the event, email Ms. Sanchez.

This is a favorite Travis tradition, but we need your help to make it a success. Volunteers assist with lunch ticket sales, check-in of guests, and Spirit Store sales. If you’re able to help, please sign up for a shift HERE. Thank you so much for lending a hand on this special day!

CHUGGA CHUGGA THANK YOU!

We had a successful first treat train thanks to all of our wonderful volunteers. Teachers and staff dug into the treats with big smiles. I am so happy to help with the event this year and meet the wonderful people that are the foundation of our school. -- Kristian Borden, Hospitality Co-Chair

Our next Treat Train is due to depart on Wednesday, October 30. Volunteer to drive the train or fill the train with goodies for our Travis staff by emailing hospitality@travispta.org or sign up HERE.
