TEA recently directed HISD to suspend its superintendent search due to an ongoing investigation of the HISD School Board regarding open meetings act violations and possible board malfeasance regarding procurement/contracts. Since Richard Carranza left HISD in March of 2018, HISD has been without a permanent superintendent. Dr. Grenita Lathan has been serving as Interim Superintendent since his departure. Depending on the outcome of the TEA investigations, HISD could be subject to sanctions, including a state takeover amid the installation of a Board of Managers by the TEA commissioner. If the investigations yield no wrongdoing, there is still the potential for state takeover later in the year due to accountability ratings and the performance of “improvement required” schools. We will keep you posted as the story develops, but in the meantime, you can read up on the situation at the Chronicle or Community Impact sites.
