Like, WOW! When Saturday night’s PTA Auction got up to 88mph, we saw some serious action. We stepped into the past with Principal Thomas McFly to help save the present AND the future. We Backed the Future this weekend, but I am also glad to be back TO the future here in 2019. Our Auction team just skidded in and hopped out of the Delorean - I hope you will join me in thanking each and every one of them for their service: Phil Teague (Auction Chair), Masha Phillips (VP-B Fundraising), Jenn Danburg (Gala Captain), Rebekah Baker (Sponsorship Captain), and Amanda Tchakarov and Jessica Taylor (Donations co-Captains). This is the end of an era, as much of this team has been involved in our last three auctions - including our 2017 Gridiron Gala and the 2018 Mardi Gras Masquerade. They have each contributed to streamlining and professionalizing an absolutely monstrous task that includes more than 600 volunteer hours, 500 sign up party tickets, 400 auction tickets, 300 individual donors, 200 class project sales, 100 school experiences … and one slightly manic PTA President. To say they have done good isn't enough. They have, and they have forever changed how we Auction, supported by all the hard work of the past Auction teams that came before them. Our Travis family owes ALL of them a debt of gratitude for the legacy they leave behind. We also owe major props to all our volunteers, sponsors, and donors, including our Travis teachers. It wouldn’t have been a party without them.
Why did Auction matter so much? As your PTA president, I have always been reticent to talk specific dollar amounts in public outside of our meetings - that's just the chaste Southerner in me! But today, the gloves are off, and I want to talk numbers that you NEED TO KNOW.
- In 2018-19, Travis lost $286,740 in funding due to a $90 PUA (per student) cut across the district as well as the loss of all district funding for GT magnet students. We lost funding for 3 classroom teachers, 1 clerk, 2 aides, and 2 hourly employees. PTA provided almost $195,000 of support to the school to close some of these gaps, including $100,000 to cover the salaries of 3 aides (2 classroom and 1 Spanish) and an hourly employee (garden). The Travis Foundation also provided an additional $32,375 to close personnel gaps for Spring 2019.
- In 2019-20, Travis stands to lose another $157,000 under a proposed district wide cut of $210 per student. This will result in further cuts in staffing.
- This is a total loss of $443,740 over the last TWO years. We are now one the LOWEST FUNDED SCHOOLS IN HISD.
And it's not going to get any better under the current broken state funding model. So what can you do? Contact your legislator. Share these numbers. Share your concerns. Ask for change. Send a message to your state senator and congressperson. Tweet them, FB them, email them, call them. Let them hear your voice and remind them of your vote. This is the only way real change will happen. Find your elected representatives HERE.
While the Auction team, along with all our stupendous PTA volunteers, worked hard to make the task of raising a significant amount of funds feel as light as possible, do know that fundraising isn't really what PTA is all about. We couched it in 80s album spoofs, some crazy decor and programming, and the best darn photoshopped movie posters this side of the Mississippi. But really, our true mission is to provide expanded opportunities for both educational engagement and community participation and to act as advocates for our students and teachers - those tasks often have nothing at all to do with money. While I am in no small way both awed and proud of the work of our amazing fundraising team, I know they share my desire to return to our regularly scheduled programming of engaging our Army of Awesome as volunteers, supporters, and advocates for Travis. Come celebrate the Auction results with us at our next PTA meeting (March 22, 7:30am), but until then, thanks to each of YOU for Backing the Future for PTA and for Travis.
— Jenny Teague, PTA President
