Hispanic Heritage Night Recap, Hupile Collection Continues

Our first PTA meeting of the school year was followed up by a fiesta! Our children were presented with the tastes of Latin America, as well as the sights and sounds through music with singer/songwriter Don Sanders and the high energy, colorful folkloric dances by Heights-based children’s dance troupe, Grupo Zapata. Everyone who came out enjoyed comida deliciosa provided by our wonderful Travis families and generous sponsors.

Un agradecimiento especial to Travis parent, Diana Martinez for bringing local sponsor Taquería Arandas (Shepherd Drive). Owners Maria Elena and Gerardo Vazquez personally served plates throughout the evening. Another big thanks to Yvonamor Palix for bringing in our other sponsor, Topo Chico, with distributor Ygnacio Vega Jr. and his team who kept us all hydrated with sparkling mineral water.

We have so much appreciation for our volunteers who gave their time and talents in food preparation and serving, decorating and the big job of cleaning up! Gracias a Diana Wylie, Diana Martinez, Martha Martinez, Gretchen Himsl and daughter Aine Himsl-Fenz and Mr. Ernesto and Dolores Gonzalez. Mil gracias to grandparent, Diana Medina (student Silas Jackson), who prepared several dishes, brought lots of bread and beautiful personal mementos and décor! Finally, extra thanks to Mr. Day and the teachers, administrators and our superstar custodial team who stayed late to support our event!

Be sure to look for an article covering the evening’s events in an upcoming issue of The Leader!

Continue to enjoy the collection of Hupiles (pronounced Wee-peel), native garments of Southern Mexico and Central America, as well as a collection of masks from the western coastal area of Mexico, which will be on display in the Travis hallway for the duration of Hispanic Heritage Month. For more information about this collection, please contact Yvonamor Palix at 281-467-6065.
