Frequently Asked questions

Q. What is the auction?

A. The Travis auction is the most important fundraiser of the year for the TravisPTA. It accounts for 90% of our yearly budget. Over the years the word “auction” has changed from defining one specific event to the general Spring fundraising season. This includes the Spring portraits, t-shirt sales, online donation sales, and the auction event itself.

Q. Why does the PTA fundraise?

A. The TravisPTA is directly responsible for many of the key programs at Travis. For example, the PTA pays for all science lab supplies, all the garden supplies, the new Everyday Math instructional materials, the Writers in the Schools creative writing program, field trips, and much more.

Q. What are the class projects?

A. Every class produces a project for sale at the auction. These often include individual pieces of artwork as well as a larger group project. For example, in the past we've seen individual projects of simple handprints on a plate and a picnic table group project painted by each student in the class. These projects result in some serious bidding wars and bragging rights.

Q. I've heard people talk about signup parties. What are they and how do I buy one?

A. Signup parties are perhaps the most popular items at the auction event. Signup parties are private parties, events, or experiences donated to Travis. As an auction guest, you may purchase a ticket to attend any of these signup parties which are scheduled for various times throughout the year. There are always numerous sign up parties for both adults and kids.  Some examples from 2014 include a cheesemaking experience, a karaoke party, a food fight, an Italian cooking class for kids, and a hayride through the Heights. Each party has a defined number of spots that are sold for a set price on a first-come, first-served basis. These parties are very popular and are exclusively available at the auction event itself.

Q. What are school experiences?

A. School experiences are donated by the teachers and staff of Travis. These opportunities are exclusive to the auction event and are typically awarded to the highest bidder. Some examples of previous school experiences include Teacher for the Day, Student Fire Marshall, and a birthday greeting on the Travis marquee.
